The original 4L60E as we know it today actually started out as the Turbo-Hydramatic (TH) or (THM) 400. The TH400 transmission had many variants along with it for other applications: TH350, TH300, TH250, TH200, 3L80, and 3L80HD. All of the aforementioned transmissions were some of the first 3-speed automatic transmissions that were slowly innovated until General Motors (GM) unveiled the Turbo-Hydramatic 700-R4 design in 1983. The transmission was known as the 700R4, 700-R4, TH700, TH700-R4, and THM700-R4 but was ultimately renamed to the 4L60-E we know today when it arrived in the Chevrolet Suburban and similar GM vehicles in 1993.
The next year, they added it to their RWD cars, like the Camaro and Corvette, as it proved best for all their rock steady rides. Starting in 1996, they took this auto gearbox to the next level by adding a bolt-on bell housing and stronger internal components. With its four drive gears, the 4L60E pairs perfectly with each longitudinal factory engine option, including every high-performance LS powertrain. By 1998, it could handle up to 360 lb-ft of torque with ease. This made it the ideal option for stock, street, and race applications.
