Ford introduced the 6R transmission series in the 2000s. It was their overarching goal to improve the efficiency of their automatic transmissions and to modernize them to keep up with competitors. The 6R75 was preceded by the 6R60 and succeeded by the 6R80. The 6R60 was used in the Ford Explorer and the Mercury Mountaineer between the years 2006 and 2008, inclusive.

The 6R75 transmission is a 6-speed automatic with six solenoids that was used in 2007 and 2008 Ford Expeditions. At the time of its introduction, the 6R75 was electronically advanced, but it was not without its problems. Users reported issues if the transmission wasn’t properly maintained on a regular basis, although this may be expected with any transmission. Another commonly reported complaint was skipping gears due to poor shift accumulation action. Overheating and fluid leaks have also been reported.

Based on the ZF 6HP26 transmission, the 6R was licensed by Ford Motor Company and produced in Livonia, Michigan at its Livonia Transmission plant, just half an hour’s drive from the famous auto manufacturing center of Detroit, Michigan. It was considered something of a technological advancement since it is an intelligent automatic transmission, featuring electronic shift scheduling, an overdrive lock-out function controlled by a push-button, adaptive shift algorithms, and a mechatronic TCM (transmission control module) for keeping alive memory (KAM). This last feature was particularly impressive, as it referenced the last available system data in the event that power was lost, which meant that the transmission didn’t have to start over with learning the driving style of the user. All in all, the 6R75 transmission was heralded as a notable step forward, which might be one of the reasons why automotive reviewers held the Ford Expedition in such high regard.
