From their inception, the TR3650 transmission models were used in the 2001-2004 Ford Mustang GT and Ford Mustang Cobra vehicle models. From 2005-2010, the TR3650 transmission was used in the S-197 Mustang with a remote shifter. They were also expanded to the 2002 Ford Tickford Experience AU Series 3 TE50 models in Australia.
Ford originally introduced the TR3650 as a replacement for their T-45 five-speed legacy transmission. They turned to Tremec for a redesign as their T-45 transmissions required a stronger gearbox that could withstand greater torque output, and the end result was the TR3650.

Compared to the legacy T-45 transmission, the Tremec TR3650 features a robust 11-inch clutch disc. This was an excellent improvement over the previous 10.5” plate found in T-45 transmissions.
The TR3650 was further upgraded in vehicle models in 2005 - 2010, where the second-generation models received a hydraulic throwout bearing that was situated along the input shaft. They also received a revised design that mounted the shifter to the vehicle body instead of the transmission. These were superior upgrades compared to the first generation, where all they had was a cable-operated clutch fork and a conventional throwout bearing.
