If you're new to Reman Transmission, it's important to understand our approach to remanufactured transmissions, such as the U140E models. Our process begins with a skilled team disassembling and reverse-engineering the transmission to enhance its performance beyond the original manufacturer's standards. Factory defects are resolved, and every component is replaced with either new or precisely machined parts, all meeting or exceeding OEM standards. After reassembly, rigorous inspections and checks ensure the transmission's quality. At Reman Transmission, we prioritize quality and stand behind our work. Each remanufactured transmission includes a remanufactured torque converter, and often a new radiator. 02Q Frequently Asked Questions
What is the torque rating of the 02Q?
The torque rating is a measure of the transmission's ability to handle the twisting force generated by the engine. In some applications, the VW 02Q transmission is known to handle torque outputs in the range of approximately 200 NM (Newton-meters) to 400 NM or even more, depending on the specific variant and any potential factory modifications. It’s engineered to be able to handle 800 NM torque. Results will vary. Just because it’s engineered for a certain maximum torque doesn’t mean that’s what you’ll get every time.
What kind of gear oil and how much fluid does a 02Q transmission take?
It’s essential to use the correct type of lubricant for your transmission. Since the 02Q transmission is a manual one, you’ll use gear oil, not transmission fluid. Transmission fluid tends to be thinner, and using it with your 02Q tranny can inhibit performance capabilities or even cause permanent damage. For your 02Q, opt for three liters of LIQUI MOLY GL4+ gear oil for best results.
What Cars Use a 02Q Transmission?
The Volkswagen Golf and Jetta were extremely popular cars when they came out. They are considered two of VW’s iconic models. Even today, used Golf and Jettas have retained a high percentage of their resale value. These two models, plus others, featured the VW 02Q transmission. Specifically, the 2010-2014 Volkswagen Golf and Golf GTI, 2009-2017 Volkswagen Jetta and Jetta GLI, and 2013-2016 Volkswagen CC.
How Long Will a 02Q Transmission Last?
The VW 02Q transmission has a reputation of being highly durable and long-lasting. Naturally how long the 02Q transmission lasts depends on varying factors, including driving habits, care and maintenance and load and torque, as well as other factors. Overall, under the best conditions, the lifespan of an original 02Q transmission could reach 300,000 miles. Typically, at about the 200k mark, leaks may start to appear.
What is the Difference Between 02Q and 02M?
The 02Q is an improvement over the 02M. When the 02Q came out, a change was made from taper bearings to ball bearings. Enough changes were made in the bell housing that you can’t substitute an 02M clutch and flywheel for an 02M transmission. However, the clutch release bearing between the two are the same.
02Q History & Information
Volkswagen came out with the 02Q transmission as an upgrade over the 02M transmission. It’s a 6-speed manual transmission that was introduced as part of their MQ 350 line. The MQ350 includes the 02M, 02Q, and 0FB. The previous iteration of the MQ350 was the 5-speed, MQ250 transmission. It’s an important distinction, as the general Volkswagen naming scheme can be a little bit confusing.
The 02M was the predecessor to the 02Q. When the 02M came out, it was offered to the market as a sporty driving transmission. VW started with a standard gearbox design and then split the output shaft into two individual units, thereby making a shorter length design that was higher than the previous version. Note that the 02M has been refined separately—not replaced—by the 02Q. The 02Q transmission is found in the 2010-2014 Volkswagen Golf and Golf GTI, 2009-2017 Volkswagen Jetta and Jetta GLI, and 2013-2016 Volkswagen CC.
Interestingly, differences between the 02M and the 02Q include the introduction of an access window for the input shaft in the outer case half. In the past, adjusting the input shaft on numerous older 02M transmissions necessitated the removal and complete disassembly of the transmission case. With the addition of this access window, the main case halves remain untouched, making servicing the 02Q transmission notably more convenient, efficient, and cost-effective compared to the 02M.
Another modification can be seen with the shift forks. In most 02M and early 02Q transmissions, these were multi-piece units crafted from steel and brass. In the 02Q, the one-piece steel units derived from the high-performance R32 became the standard moving forward, for all 02Q transmissions. Also, the 02Q dispenses with the vehicle speed sensor found in the 02M. Despite their many similarities, it's important to note that these two transmissions are generally considered non-interchangeable without several extensive modifications.
