About Our Remanufactured 02M Transmission
When it's time to replace your 02M VW transmission, it's important to choose the best available option. The remanufactured 02M transmission for sale here at Reman-Transmission offers the best balance between affordability and reliability. It is not only more budget friendly than a new one, but may actually be better. That’s because our remanufacturers correct any known factory defects during the remanufacturing process.
Remanufacturing is more extensive than just rebuilding. In remanufacturing, every part inside the bell housing is either replaced or remachined. This allows all of the parts to wear evenly and avoids putting unnecessary stress on old components.
Meanwhile, rebuilding only replaces failed parts, while leaving other old components as-is. This leads to a less reliable result compared to remanufacturing because the untouched old parts will wear differently than the new ones.
Buying a used transmission that hasn’t been reworked is the cheapest way to get your car rolling, but this has some drawbacks. The main one is that nothing has been done to bring new life to the old parts, so it's hard to gauge how long a used transmission will last. Even here at Reman-Transmission, the warranty on a used transmission is far shorter than the one on a remanufactured gearbox.
Choosing a new transmission may seem like the safest bet, especially considering that it's the most expensive option, but that isn’t always the case. A new one still has all of its factory defects and poor engineering decisions untouched. With the 02M, that means you can expect problems with the shift forks, some of which were made with soft brass; the synchros; and the input shaft bearing. Problems like these will have been fixed in a remanufactured transmission from Reman-Transmission.
At Reman-Transmission, we stand behind the transmissions we sell. Each remanufactured unit is warranted for up to 36 months with unlimited mileage. We do also offer used transmissions for those who need to get their car moving as quickly as possible. Used versions are warranted for up to 6 months or 6,000 miles.
Each transmission is thoroughly inspected and tested before it gets shipped to you. You can rest assured that there will be no bad surprises when you order from us.
Shipping is surprisingly affordable considering the size and weight of a transmission. We only charge $398 to send your transmission to a commercial location, such as your preferred auto shop. If you would like your transmission to be shipped to your home, it's just $99 more.
02M Frequently Asked Questions
What is the horsepower rating of the 02M?
This unit can generally handle up to 500 ft-lbs. of WHP.
What kind of transmission fluid and how much fluid does the 02M transmission take?
Special VW transmission fluid formulated especially for the 02M 6 speed manual transmission is recommended. The unit takes just over two liters.
What cars use the 02M transmission?
This transmission is found in the 2002-2004 Volkswagen Golf and Golf GTI, 2002-2004 Volkswagen Jetta and Jetta GLI.
How long will an 02M transmission last?
User reports of specific longevity are lacking, however, many state that when this transmission goes bad, the shift forks are often at fault. A remanufactured transmission from Reman-Transmission will have this and other such flaws fixed.
What is the difference between the 02M and 02Q?
The bearings in the VW 02M transmission are taper style, while in the 02Q, they are ball bearings. Also, there are small changes in the bell housing and spacing. The 02Q has an access window and deletes the vehicle speed sensor that the 02M has.
02M History & Information
This manual transmission came on the scene in 2002, when it was used in the Mk1 Audi TT 225 Quattro. It was then added to cars with higher production levels. Later that year, it was installed in the 2002 VW Golf GTI and Jetta GLI 24V VR6 and GTI 337 1.8t models. It remained in use until 2006, when it was replaced by the 02Q.
The 02M transmission is notably compact, and is made to be able to fit in vehicles that would otherwise hold a 5-speed gearbox. This transmission is a six-speed manual model.
Volkswagen designed this transmission by starting with a standard design. The usual design has a single input shaft and a single output shaft. To make it work in a small space, the designers split the output shaft into two units. This greatly shortened the length of the 02M transmission, but made it quite tall compared to units using the typical design. This transmission's base form hasn’t changed since it was introduced, but it has had refinements made through the years.
Like other modern transmissions made by VW and Audi, the 02M is shifted by cables. Power is delivered through a hydraulic clutch.
This transmission is available in front-wheel and all-wheel drive versions. The all-wheel versions use an outboard transfer case. This gearbox has a 240mm flywheel and clutch assembly, which is larger than the 5-speed 02A/02J. A variety of bolt configurations exist, with the specifics depending on the engine the transmission is paired with.
Even though the 02M is very similar to the 02Q which succeeded it, there are enough differences that a clutch and flywheel kit made for the 02M will not work with an 02Q. There are also differences in the bearings.
Another name for the 02M is MQ350. This name can be used to refer to any of three variations within its class. Its class is made up of three different 6-speed transmissions that are very similar to each other, but that are not identical.
