Our E4OD Transmission Upgrades
Heavy-duty recalibration kit installed to reduce slippage and increase durability.
Upgraded locking snap ring for coast clutch and spiral lock snap ring for 4th clutch address OE design flaws and eliminate premature failures.
One-piece rear case bushing improves internal fluid flow and lubrication.
Center support is machined and modified to accept snap ring.
New pressure regulator and boost valve system eliminates delayed engagement, shudder, and soft shifting.
Tru-Flat stator qualification and machining process.
Upgraded long-spline center shaft drum on all diesel and V10 units.
Upgraded HD billet single-clutch torque converter on all diesel and V10 units.
Completely remanufactured pump with new line bore bushings eliminates leaks and provides superior flow and durability.
Fully remanufactured torque converter is tested for leaks, lockup, concentricity, and balance. Upgrades exceed OE requirements and eliminate the possibility of front seal leaks, premature bushing wear, and vibration.
All-new custom-spec bushings improve internal fluid flow control and pressures.
All bushings and machined surfaced are polished to a mirrorline OE finish of 15 RA or better.
Every transmission is cold-and hot-tested using a proprietary dynamometer testing program that includes fully synthetic automatic transmission fluid and a filtration system.
E4OD Frequently Asked Questions
Is the E40D transmission good?
Yes, the E40D transmission is a good transmission. It is powerful, durable, and reliable. If you need a new transmission, a remanufactured E4OD could last you 200,000 miles or longer with proper maintenance. Work with our team to find the best transmission for your vehicle.
Is the E4OD the same as the 4R100?
No, the 4R100 was designed to be a replacement for the E40D transmission. The E40D transmission was manufactured between 1989 and 1997. In 1997, the 4R100 was introduced. They are nearly identical on the exterior, but the parts are not necessarily interchangeable.
How do I know if my transmission is the E40D?
Take a look at the pan shape of your transmission If you see a rectangle shape with a small rectangular area cut from the front right corner, this is probably an E40D transmission. You can also count the bolts. If you count 20 bolts, you probably have an American E40D transmission.
How much does it cost to rebuild an E40D transmission?
The exact cost varies depending on the transmission. Instead of paying for a rebuild, you should go with a remanufactured transmission instead. A remanufactured transmission is tested to make sure it meets the specifications of the manufacturer. That way, you get the best transmission possible.
E4OD History & Information
The E4OD transmission from Ford is one of the most successful designs in the company’s history. It was first produced in 1989 and was slowly replaced in production by the 4R100 transmission in 1997. The 4R100 was replaced by the 5R110W which was finally superseded by the 6R140. Even though the transmission was only in production for roughly 8 years, the E40D lived on through the 4R100 since it was an exact copy of the E40D but with slightly stronger internal components. The E40D, also known as the E4OD, was a paradigm shift for Ford, as it was the company's first electronically-controlled transmission. The E40D transmission featured numerous upgrades, improvements, and changes when compared to its predecessors. It has a higher contact ratio within the planetary gear sets, an upgraded coast clutch, and a better hydraulic pump. In addition, the E40D transmission has better fuel efficiency when compared to the C-6 and has an overdrive gear set. Finally, the shift controls are also handled electronically, replacing the older hydraulic pressure regulation and shift functions.
The E40D transmission was one of the few auto transmissions available behind the Power Stroke diesel engines through 1998. The transmission appeared in the Ford F-150, Ford F-250, Ford F-350, Expedition, and Bronco. For the 4WD capable vehicles that the E4OD was in, it was paired to mainly Borg-Warner transfer cases like the BW1356, BW4406, and BW4407. The E40D transmission is not the same as the AOD or AOD-E. One main difference is in the new select gear shift pattern. The shift pattern of the AOD and AODE is P, R, N, OD, D, and 1. The E40D transmission shift pattern is P, R, N, OD, 2, and 1.
The E40D transmission is a 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission that has been designed to replace the Ford C6. It was used in the Ford F-series from 1989 to 1998. It can hold between 17 to 18 quarts and requires a fluid and filter replacement every 30,000 miles. Among other transmissions, the E40D transmission has a high fluid capacity, a fully electronic shift system, an electronic fluid pressure control system, and features standalone transmission control modules in diesel engines.
