In 2005, Aisin AW, previously known as Aisin-Warner became the world’s largest manufacturer of automatic transmissions. Toyota Motor Corporation is one of the two major shareholders. Aisin-Warner was to be the only producer of automatic rear-wheel-drive transmissions for Toyota. Aisin AW now supplies automatic transmissions to almost all major OEM brands. Toyota Motor Corporation transmissions built by Aisin-Warner include the A650E.
Beyond the electronic controls of the shift points, clutch, and torque converter lockup, the A650E is nearly identical to its hydraulic counterpart model. The design was intended for use with engines of lower horsepower (around 215 hp), but the model demonstrated its capacity to handle significantly higher horsepower very well (as high as 290) in some Toyota and Lexus models.
From 1998 to 2005, Lexus installed the A650E in its luxurious mid-size sports sedans and, from 2001 to 2005, most frequently in its lower-priced IS 300 models. It was also installed in the manufacturer’s full-size luxury LS model from 1998 to 2000.
The Toyota A650E 5-speed Automatic Transmission was installed in a wide variety of Lexus vehicles between 1998 and 2005, (although, eventually, the 6-speed automatic became more popular among loyal Lexus buyers). The A650E was installed in Lexus GS300, GS430, LS400, LS430, SC400, SC430, and IS 300 models as well as the Toyota Altezza from 1998 to 2005.
