About Our Remanufactured 700R4 Transmission
When the 700R4 transmission in your vehicle finally wears out, you’ll need a new one. Reman-Transmission sources high-quality used and remanufactured transmissions from the most prestigious suppliers in the auto industry. In many cases, these transmissions are better than when they came out of the factory, as the factory parts known to fail are corrected during the remanufacturing process for our reman products.
During the remanufacturing process, most components in the transmission are replaced with new OEM parts. Those that are not replaced with new OEM parts are re-machined. This means that if a transmission has a defect from the factory, the defect is cured. Typically, transmission rebuilders only replace broken parts. However, remanufactured transmissions have all new or re-machined parts, which makes a huge difference in longevity and power.
Reman-Transmission uses a custom interchange system to determine which parts, including transmissions, fit your vehicle. We also offer a price match guarantee and a warranty of up to 6 months or 60,000 miles for used transmissions and up to 36 months with unlimited miles for a remanufactured transmission.
Reman-Transmission offers fast, flat-rate shipping across the continental United States.
700R4 Frequently Asked Questions
How much power can a 700R4 handle?
A stock TH700R4 can handle up to 350 horsepower. An upgraded TH700R4 can handle up to 550 horsepower. While some people have stated they had problems with these transmissions in vehicles with over 300 horsepower, a remanufactured transmission can handle up to 350 horsepower.
What kind of transmission fluid and how much fluid does a 700R4 transmission take?
A TH700R4 uses Dexron III or Dextron/Mercron III transmission fluid. Some people use Dexron IV transmission fluid. If you are not sure which fluid to use, contact Reman-Transmission to find out which fluid they recommend for your rebuilt 700R4.
How much does a 700R4 weigh?
The GM TH700R4 weighs about 155 pounds. Those in four-wheel drive trucks are stockier-built transmissions and may weigh a little more. The heavier transmission is a K-case transmission.
How long is a 700R4 transmission?
The TH700R4 is 23.5 inches long. The tail shaft housing is 6.25 inches, and the width is 20 inches. It is 5 inches from the engine/transmission mating surface to the cross-member mount bolt.
What years did Chevy use the 700R4 transmission?
Chevy used the 700R4 from 1982 through 1993. You’ll find it in the 1982 through 1992 Corvettes, Caprices, and Impalas, and from 1983 through 1993 in the Camaros and Pontiac Firebirds.
How many gears does the 700R4 transmission have?
The 700R4 has four gears: 1st: 3.059; 2nd 1.625, 3rd 1.00 and 4th gear is 0.696. It also has reverse with a 2.294 gear ratio.
What vehicles came with a 700R4 transmission?
Several vehicles featured the 700R4 transmission, including: 1982-1991 Blazers 1982-1992 Corvettes and Caprice models 1982-1993 GMC Jimmy 1983-1990 Safari Vans 1983-1991 GMC S10 and S15 Pickups and S15 Sonomas 1983-1992 Camaros and Pontiac Firebirds 1984 Buick Lesabre 1984-1992 Suburbans 1985-1992 Astro Vans 1988-1992 Holden Commodore 1989-1992 S10 Blazers 1989-1991 S10 Pickups 1990-1992 Cadillac Fleetwoods, Broughams and Limousines 1991-1992 GMC Syclone
How long will a 700R4 transmission last?
A TH700R4 can last for well over 100,000 miles if you take care of it. If you race or go mudding, depending on how much horsepower you put into it, it may last less than 100,000 miles.
What is the difference between the 700R4 and the 4L60-E?
The main difference is that the 4L60-E is an electronic transmission. It has a case connector on the passenger side for the wiring harness. Also, it doesn’t have a governor cover, whereas the 700R4 does.
700R4 History & Information
We know the 700R4 transmission was created to replace the workhorse TH350 with an overdrive to help with fuel economy in the 1980s. However, the first TH700R4 transmissions only used a 27-spline input shaft, which was determined to be the transmission’s weak link. In 1989, GM upgraded the TH700R4 with a 30-spline input shaft to get rid of the weak spot. Both the TH350 and TH400 transmissions used a 30-spline shaft and were popular because of their strength.
The first time GM used the Turbo Hydra-Matic 700R4 was in GM trucks and cars in 1982. The transmission was a Hydra-Matic MD-8, and that is cast into the bell housing. You can also identify the TH700R4 by the large, square, 16-bolt transmission oil pan. It has a 0.69:1 ratio for the fourth gear, giving it better fuel economy than its predecessor, the TH350.
GM has used the TH700R4 for over 10 years, and it is still easy to find used or remanufactured. Other ways to identify a TH700R4 is by looking for the speedometer gear sleeve on the driver’s side of the tail housing and the governor, which is on the driver’s side of the transmission. This transmission also uses an electronic control solenoid. The electrical connector is also located on the driver’s side of the transmission.
Transmissions manufactured from 1982 through 1984 have a 27-spline input shaft, while those manufactured in later years have a 30-spline input shaft. If you change the torque converter, the two versions of the TH700R4 are interchangeable.
Before the TH700R4, GM used the Powerglide transmission and then the TH350, which was a three-speed automatic transmission. Though the TH350 was a strong transmission that could stand up to even the rigors of racing, it didn’t have the overdrive gear the 700R4 has.
Because of increasing fuel costs in the 1980s, GM created the TH700R4, which had a fourth overdrive gear. The TH350 had only three gears, and the third gear was a direct-drive gear. GM fans prefer the transmissions manufactured from 1987 through 1993, as they are more durable than the early 700R4 transmission.
This transmission’s reign came to an end in 1993 when GM introduced the 4L60E to take its place. You can find affordable remanufactured TH700R4 transmissions at Reman-Transmission. They are often better than the original transmissions as they have been rebuilt with newer and better parts. Warranties for our 700R4 transmissions are up to 6 months or 60,000 miles for used transmissions and up to 36 months with unlimited miles for a remanufactured transmission.
