About Our Remanufactured A618 Transmission

Transmission

The A618 actually refers to an entire family of 4-speed automatic transmissions that include the 47RE, 47RH, and 48RE. However, A618 is also used in some instances to refer just to 47RE transmissions. Here on the Reman-Transmission website, A618 refers to both 47RE and 47RH transmissions. From the 1990s, the Chrysler product family line of transmissions TorqueFlite™ A518/A618 was primarily used in rear-wheel drive Dodge and Jeep pickup trucks and vans. The A618 is a modified design created to produce a heavier-duty version of the A518.

Reman-Transmission sells top-quality used and remanufactured A618 transmissions. Our Dodge A618 transmission price is the most competitive in our industry.

In our remanufactured A618 transmissions, every part has been replaced with a new or re-machined part. All parts are inspected and tested. Each replacement part meets or exceeds the OEM specifications. Our used A648 transmissions have also been thoroughly inspected and determined to be in good operating condition.

A remanufactured Dodge A618 transmission for sale from Reman-Transmission has been completely remade. All working parts of the transmission have been replaced. For example, the output shaft has been replaced for compatibility with modern yokes. Bushings are replaced for optimum fluid flow and pressure regulation. The torque converter is replaced, which improves the performance and extends the life of the transmission. The pump is replaced to enable consistent fluid pressure, permitting smoother engagement of gears on shifting. All the valves are replaced for extended durability, and more efficient power use and gear switching.

Reman-Transmission does even more to add exceptional value than replacing all parts during remanufacturing. We also correct all known factory defects in the transmissions during the remanufacturing process. Going this far beyond what is normally expected during the remaking of a transmission produces A618 transmissions that are superior in quality to a new transmission directly from the factory.

The Reman-Transmission warranty for a remanufactured A618 transmission is up to 36 months of unlimited mileage. The shipping charge is $270. Our warranty for used A618 transmissions is active for up to 6 months or 6,000 miles.

A618 Frequently Asked Questions

The Dodge A618 transmission was manufactured by Chrysler beginning in the 1990s for installation in trucks and vans. It is an upgraded version of the A518, built for heavier duty. The A618 is also called the 46RE. It has been modified with electronic control of governor pressures from the earlier 46RH hydraulic version. The A618 was eventually renamed the 47RE.

The Dodge A618 transmission was built as an upgraded version of the A518, creating a heavier-duty unit. The A518 has hydraulically controlled governor pressures, whereas the A618 features an updated design with electronic control. The driving torque of the A618 is the equivalent of 610 Nm.

The best way to determine which unit you have is likely to be by checking the transmission identification number and date code. Or, you can simply attempt to match the visual appearance of the transmission casing to a photo of the A618.

Reman-Transmission provides the best quality of remanufactured Dodge 618 transmissions at the best price in our industry. We also sell fully inspected used A618 transmissions.

A618 History & Information

Chrysler began manufacturing the Dodge A618 transmission in the mid-1990s as part of the automaker’s TorqueFlite group. It was preceded by the A518 (a lighter-duty design), the 46RH (hydraulic), and the 46RE (electronic) versions, and later followed by the 68RFE (electronic).

The A618 transmission can be built for 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive vehicles. The heavy-duty A618 can be built to service V10 diesel utility trucks.

Reputed for its reliable performance under conditions of normal routine use, the A618 transmission continued in use and was ultimately renamed the 47RE. The modified A618, now 47RE, featured electronically controlled governor pressure. The 46RE (upgraded from the 46RH), also in the TorqueFlite array, offered a modified A518 for heavy-duty use. The 46RE was installed in trucks and vans beginning in the 1990s.

Since that period, the A618/47RE has remained in use. A newer, even heavier-duty version, the 48RE features steel planetary carriers instead of aluminum and a larger number of clutch plates in transmissions serving in V-10 applications. It has six pinion gears. It also features heavy-duty overdrive and exceptionally strong internal working parts and has a torque rating equal to 610 Nm. The A618 automatic transmission appears in the 1994 - 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks. If the truck was a 4x4, this transmission was typically mated to the NP241DLD transfer case.

Alternatively, the lighter-duty overdrive planetary of the A518 is frequently used to replace the 4-pinion planetary of applicable light-duty truck transmissions. Versions of the A618 have been manufactured containing rear planet sets with 4, 5, and 6 pinions.

To determine the drive ratio of an A618, you can check the protruding plug at the back left of the main housing to see if the unit is a lockup. If there are 3 pins on the plug, the unit is a lockup, delivering a direct 1:1 drive ratio. If there are only 2 pins, that means the transmission is not a lockup design. Both A518 and A618 transmissions have been built both ways.
